Why do so many people prefer four strokes over two strokes?
Category: Strokes
It seems that so many people prefer the four strokes over two strokes now. I don’t get it, I’ve ridden many four strokes and two strokes and you couldn’t force me to buy a four stroke. What makes four strokes so enticing to so many people? If they made modern two strokes do you believe they would gain ground again?
I’m sorry I didn’t clarify but I was mainly talking about dirt bikes. I think riding 4 strokes on the street is justified, it’s just on the dirt and sand I can’t justify it.

I liked the older two stroke street bikes. In my day I had a Kawasaki H1 750 – a Yamaha RD350 and a Suzuki Titan T500.
The 750 was the fastes and quickest that I have ever ridden – a bit twitchy though
The 350 was the best two stroke street bike ever made. Mine was converted to a cafe racer.
The Suzuki was built like a tank. Couldn’t break it.

main reason is you have to mix the oil into the gas for a 2 stroke. the four stroke you just pour in some gas and your gone. and the epa and tree huggers do not like the dirty burning 2 strokes. the 4 stroke will give you more power at lower rpm then the 2 stroke which in turn saves gas and pollution. i think the main reason people prefer 4 strokes is the mixing of the oil into the gas for 2 strokes.

A good 4 stroke will have decent torque from low through high RPM’s. A 2 stroke will scream, but only when in the power band… so, bottom line, a 4 stroke offers more everywhere, and is easier to ride because you can power out in a higher gear instead of having to shift down.
(plus, 4 strokes are less polluting for those greenies)

For dirt bike riding: A four stroke offers more relaxed riding off road. When approaching a hill you don’t really have to worry about your gear or a power band like you would on a two-stroke . With the 4 stroke you’ll just lug up that hill like “thomas the chu chu train”
For street riding: It is very simple, EMISSIONS. For those who don’t know how two strokes work. A two stroke is very efficient and simple, but in consequence it burns oil. Therefor polar bears in the Antarctic won’t be hugging you for your greeness.

My very first bike was a 2-stroke, a Lambretta scooter. But I think what’s hurt them the most is the smog laws. They’re just very dirty so it’s easy to set air quality standards that outlaw them.
Besides, I ride a water-cooled 1100. DId they ever make a 2-stroke that big?
