What would cause chest pain WHILE swallowing?
Category: Angina & Chest Pain

I have chest pain on the right side, behind my breast bone. It ONLY hurts when i swallow solid food. It is sometimes a mixture of pain and burning as the food passes down my esophagus. What would be a cause of this? I know it isn’t heart burn or anything like that because it doesn’t affect me after I eat, only during the action of swallowing.

I not a doctor but have suffered similar symptoms. My guess is that you have a hiatal hernia (a weakening around the valve between the esophagus and stomach) combine with acid reflux. Suggestion: see a gastroenterologist to be sure. If left untreated, the acid reflux can wear away at the esophagus possibly resulting in esophagial cancer….not a pretty situation.
If you don’t want to see a doctor, try using a 14-day course of prilosec otc (or its generic). My guess is you’ll feel alot better on the drug.

Sounds like possible acid reflux ~ try Prilosec and see a doctor if it continues. I didn’t realize how serious this can be until it happened to me, but you can actually develop sores/irritated areas on your esophagus from untreated acid reflux that can cause the type of pain you’re describing. I am now on prescribed meds for it and feel fine.
If you feel this is not it ~ see a doctor now.
