even if he doesn’t go to the dr, it’s not a big deal. when you get them once, they don’t usually ever go away. i ran track for 4 yrs, got shin splints in 10th grade, still get the pains occasionally. he’ll just need to stretch his shins really well b/f working out to minimize the pain.

He’s actually smart not to go to the doctor for shin splints, because there’s nothing a doctor can do for them.

Shin splints is a condition where the tendon detaches from the shinbone. Once it has pulled away, it can’t be reattached. Resting the affected limb can give the tendon time to heal, but it will never be quite the same.

As long as he knows it’s shin splints and not a stress fracture, just resting is the best recourse. Of course, if it is a stress fracture, there’s *still* nothing the doctor can do….

He doesn’t need to go to the doctor. I had shin splints althroughout cross country and track, and even a bit in volleyball. He might have shin splints from having tight calves. Make sure he warms up properly and stretches before he goes into any activity. Also, if he can see a PT or massage therapist that can massage out his shins and calves, that could also help. It’s pretty painful getting the massage, but it’s well worth it.

If not, just ice in 15-20 minute intervals, 2-3 times a day.
