Category: Scabies

If you have a roommate that has scabies, what are the chances of getting scabies if your towels are touching eachother in the bathroom, or hamper, etc…?

Very few people that think they have Scabies, actually have it. Scabies is diagnosed by a Dermatologist after taking a small biopsy of the “infected” skin. You have to be very intimate with someone to get scabies, physical contact is usually the way its spread.

Scabies is misdiagnosed easily as it can appear similar to eczema and heat rash which also are common in the summer. It is contagious in contexts that aren’t sexual and can be passed around at nursing homes, schools and day care centers as well as a family living situation. They suggest all people in the household use the prescription cream preventatively if someone in the home is diagnosed. It can be picked up from sharing the same bed, furniture for long periods of time or skin contact.

You can absolutely get scabies without sex. If your towels, clothing or bedsheets are in close contact, it can be passed. Scabies is amazingly contagious!

If your room mate has them and is getting treated, YOU SHOULD TOO! Otherwise, you likely will get them and just pass them back to him. Unfortunately, you won’t know for about 2-4 weeks after you get them that you have them, since the itching doesn’t start until the first eggs hatch.

    Treat yourself! Scabies suck!
