The recognition of the middle-age stage in male development of andropause, which is comparable to women’s menopause, is hampered by the lack of a clear understanding of the chemistry and physiology specific to aging men. Men are still capable of reproduction well into and beyond middle age. Yet a man’s sexual desire and potency varies, often according to his testosterone level. Recent studies show that the lowered testosterone levels endemic in aging men–the gradual drop that is quite normal–is being exacerbated by environmental agents. Testosterone-blocking estrogen agents are present in insecticides, industrial materials, pharmaceuticals, and foods. Men are daily inundated with a “cocktail” of estrogen agents that alter the fine balance of testosterone that makes them male.
In The Natural Testosterone Plan, Stephen Harrod Buhner shows why men need help to maintain their testosterone levels as they age and explains how safe, naturally occurring phytoandrogens–plant medicines that contain male hormones–can remedy the depletion exerted by the environment. Buhner details how each phytoandrogen works, when its use is indicated, and the most appropriate method of application.

With every book on herbal therapy I’m able to learn something new. Stephen Buhner’s book not only refreshed what I may have forgotten, but introduced me to some enlightening efficacious therapies which may profoundly enable me to assist the many men, that seek my naturopathic service, who are afflicted with loss of virility and sexual vitality as well as those who have compromises in prostate health.
Additionally, Buhner backs up his research with credible scientific data, in a concise and understandable manner, that any reasonably intelligent person could comprehend.

The Natural Testosterone Plan: For Sexual Health and Energy

Let’s face it; we no longer live in the same world our parents did. Food additives and preservatives, environmental pollutants, pharmaceuticals–the list seems to go on forever with things that affect our natural balance. It was encouraging to see that there are naturally occurring phytoandrogens (plant medicines that contain male hormones) that counteract the effects of testosterone depletion. This book is superbly laid out in easy-to-understand language to get you back on track, complete with dosages, possible herb/drug interactions, and availability.Rahasya Poe, Lotus Guide, http://www.lotusguide.com

I am a 59 year old male that has read a lot about hormones. I thought the book by Eugene Shippen “The Testosterone Syndrome” was the best so far, but this book surpassed my expectations. It would be nice to see another update from Shippen, since it has been many years since it was written. I was curious as to why no references were made to Shippen from Morgentaler? Having said that, it was easy to read and was fascinating in that he was there where the research was done that had been accepted fact for so many years. He clearly refuted the old theory and I salute him for having the guts to do so. Many doctors are opening their eyes now to a new frontier in treating middle aged men. Any guy that is thinking of feeling better and adding life to his years, it is a must read.

Every once in a while as a resident of the NW I give in to the notion that alternative this or herbal that might make sense. I got this thinking that perhaps there was some herbal or alternative approach to speeding up recovery after workouts and such.
The book is decent enough in going over supplements and what sort of boost they might provide. The problem is that the central premise of all supplement use is just wrong, and the book does nothing to show that things might be different with testosterone.
The body maintains equilibrium levels of hormones. If you increase your intake of them the body simply breaks it down and excretes it. If you increase your intake of precursors, the body simply doesn’t use them and they are quickly broken down and excreted as they build up. In short you can have an effect on levels in the body over the very short run and thats it.
