Category: Gastric Reflux

I really dont know what to do to make her keep her food down she is gaining weight and her pediatrician doesn’t seem as concerned about it as i am but sometimes she just seems to be in pain and arches back and let’s out a forced cry she’ll do that until she spits up about 1/2 oz of milk then she goes to bed she is on regular formula and also Zantac she was also taking metoclopram but that just seemed to make it worse so her doctor told me to stop giving it to her if anyone can please help me with some advice
she isn’t lactose intolerant and she didnt take to breast milk that actually would always end up in me

My boys were that bad once i stopped giving breastmilk, the formula just couldn’t sit right. I had to start doing cereal in the bottles (per the Dr’s request) just to try to keep it down but even that wasn’t working the greatest. Just keep up with the medicine the Dr gave, ask the Dr about the cereal and see what he/she says. Don’t lay baby flat on her back at night as this makes the reflux horrible, she will need to be proped up to sleep more comfortable. The only place my son could sleep was either on me sitting up or in his swing. During feedings don’t rock in the rocking chair.

switch to a soy based formula..she could be lactose intolerant and docs never address that fact till you already figured it out . This would cause reflux and severe pain

It is not all milk that is being spit up. I was concerned too because my son was a preemie with acid reflux and he would projectile vomit 2-3 times a day on the regular formula. His doctor said that when a baby spits up most of what you see if mucous and not milk, so they are still getting the nutrients they need. Also, what helped him IMMENSELY is switching him to soy formula. He rarely even spit up after a couple of days after the switch.

Contact a childrens hospital and ask for a Dr appt. or Dr list of gastrogist Get all records to take. Explain yoiu feel child is much more ill then your present DR is letting on. Make a diary of symptoms. I saw this on Medical Mystery but that poor child was almost 4 before he got a simple operation to fix the problem. *mamatx

if you are formula feeding perhaps try a thickened formula. this may stay down better for her.

A speach therapist is who you need to see. I know it sounds strange but that is the person who will help her learn how to swallow.

How much formula are you trying to feed her at a time? It sounds like she is either getting too much to begin with or she is sucking in too much airand and getting “bubbles” in her tummy or something. I am not too familiar with formula, but it could be the kind you are feeding her. Try feeding her 1/2 and once less at a time even if you have to feed her more frequently or burping her more often throughout the feeding. If that doesn’t work try a formula change.

Take your daughter to a chiropractor!!! It helps my 3 month daughter a great deal.

First off just to set the story straight chiropractors DO NOT crack babies. They put light pressure enough to blanch skin on the back of the neck.

My daughter had/has reflux BAD. Gagging/choking, hiccups, sleeplessness, spitting up/puking, She also could not turn her head to the right at all, etc. She is on Zantac but only til she is 4 months old just in case. I tried changing her formula to Alimentum but she refused to eat it. I had her sleeping on a wedge but she always slid down to the bottom from squirming. I do have her on cereal. Barley cereal is the best because it causes loose stools. Rice cereal causes constipation and oatmeal cause gas.

Since I brought my daughter to the chiro she sleeps ALOT longer, eats less (babies with reflux tend to eat more because they think it will help there tummy), no hiccups, no gagging, no spitting up/puking, etc.

I was very skeptical at first but I felt sooo bad for my baby i thought I could atleast look into it. She is sooo much happier. The chiro said she had a subluxation (google subluxation, you will be amazed of the symtoms.) The chiro said she got it because my labor was so long (29.5 hours), because she was “lodged” in my canal and because they had to use the vacuum to get her out. A subluxation is where the atlas vertabrae pinches the vegas nerve. The vegas nerve controls so much in the body which is why it can cause so many problems when irritated. It can cause reflux and colic (just a couple).

If you have any other questions please ask. I feel so bad for all the babies that are out there in pain and misery and don’t get the help. I don’t believe in putting newborns/infants/toddlers on medication unless absolutley necessary. There is usually always a reason for there symptoms and it is better to cure it then shadow it with medication. The PEDS give medication to shadow it until they “grow out of it”. But the medication doesn’t always help and how do you know when they have “grow out of it”.
