I was so thrilled to find this little gem, I bought three copies – one for me, and two to share with friends who are at risk of serious kidney disease. The first section of the book summarizes in plain English the special dietary issues that confront patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), with tips about how to eat for health. This is followed by a collection of delicious recipes to help a person with CKD get started on a healthier path without sacrificing family and social life. I couldn’t wait to get started!

The book begins with pages describing the renal diet for people NOT on dialysis. Most diet guides and cookbooks are for people ON dialysis and only after buying them does one realize they are very different. This book had great information based on current research and the recipes are easy and delicious. Each recipe includes nutritional analysis. Preparing menus and recipes from this book give one a secure feeling of managing this disease process correctly and preventing further decline of kidney function. The book has recipes that would apply to kidney disease as well as recipes for diabetes and kidney disease all for people not on dialysis. Some recipes are very simple others are more complex to put together meals that meet the nutrient restrictions of CKD. The point of the book is to serve as a guide for a CKD renal diet. This book is only a guide for improving and maintaining kidney function.

It is obvious when reading the introduction to Kidney Health Gourmet that the author has a wealth of experience in counseling people with kidney disease. She takes a complicated diet and explains it in an easy to read and personable manner. You feel like you are talking to your own personal dietitian. The recipes are simple and delicious. I especially like the Shrimp Scampi Greek Style. As a dietitian myself I think this is a valuable diet guide and cookbook for people with kidney disease who are not on dialysis.

Kidney Health Gourmet features an informative introduction and pep talk for people with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). The author recommends scientifically based changes in diet and lifestyle designed to slow a decline in kidney function. Her recipes are tasty, easy to prepare, and tailored for those with CKD. However, you don’t have to be diagnosed with kidney disease to enjoy this book! The author provides a healthy approach to cooking and eating which will benefit anyone. The French Bistro Chicken and the Honey Dijon Salmon are fabulous.

I am so thankful I didn’t buy the $73 edition. I was not impressed by the meagerness of the recipes – many of which looked like they were lifted from Betty Crocker in 1964 – honestly – Cucumber dill dip and Shortcake with Strawberries topped with Cool Whip? However, the information provided about calories, potassium, phospates was informative but could be found on any website pertaining to CKD. Overall, disappointing. The fillers – napkin folding and quick fixes were designed to add pages and were completely unneccessary. I won’t even take this to my nephrologist for fear of being laughed out of his office.
