if you don’t die of starvation first:
- wrecking your teeth from stomach acid
- destroying your bones from lack of nutrition
- stunting your growth
- wrecking your oesophagus from throwing up (so you may end up eating through a tube)
- stopping you ever having children
…shall I go on? Please, please, please get help.

Yes, doctors will almost certainly be able to tell.
The long and short term effects of bulimia include:
Your salivary glands in your neck will swell, making your neck, face and cheeks swell. This classic ‘chipmunk’ or ‘hamster’ appearance will make it look like you’ve gained weight because your face will be rounder and puffy.
You’ll also develop heart problems. When you vomit, you lose essential trace elements like potassium, sodium (salt) and electrolytes. Electrolytes are what keep the heart beating normally and if your electrolyte balance is disturbed through vomiting, your heart rhythm may become irregular. This will make you weak and ill. You may pass out and be admitted to hospital against your will. You may even suffer a heart attack and this can kill you.
Low sodium levels will lead to low blood pressure and ultimately, dizziness, fainting, blackouts and further cardiac problems.
Many people who induce vomiting are found dead by the toilet. That’s because of the enormous strain on the body and heart from self-induced vomiting. You can rupture your stomach from doing this. If your stomach ruptures, this means CERTAIN and INSTANT death. You won’t have time to get help.
You know bulimia is a serious illness and is classified in the DSM IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) as a psychiatric disorder. If this carries on without receiving any help you could end up seriously ill or worse – dead.
Please seek help now before it’s too late.

Honestly, it really depends on the person. I was severely bulimic (I’m talking bingeing & purging more than ten times/day), and almost nobody knew until I told them. People didn’t start to figure it out until I lost weight. Months went by before I finally told my therapist and doctors, because they didn’t figure it out. I didn’t look ill at all until I was quite deep into it. You need to speak up for yourself if you want any quality of life back.
