How can I start an essay about autism?
Category: Autism

I have to write an essay about autism and I’m stuck on the introduction. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Autism is all over the news right now, a very different situation than 18 years ago when we were looking for the cause of our son’s developmental delay. …

Your intro really depends on the type of essay, and the tone you’re trying to create, but, in general, you should have a good attention-getter. That is, something to grab the reader’s attention and make him/her want to keep reading. Here are three very different ideas:
1. How about starting with a quote about autism? There are a ton of “famous quotes” websites. For example:
http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/keywords/autism.html
Maybe try to find a good one from a president, world leader, or famous actor.
2. Maybe start with a statistic about autism. For example, “Autism currently effects 1 out of 157 Americans”. I’m not sure if that is the current number, but you can easy find numbers online regarding the growth and prevalence of autism in the U.S. and around the world.
3. You can start with a pop culture reference. Maybe something from the movie Rainman or I Am Sam?
