Do you draw with short strokes of the pencil or long continuous lines?

I find i draw much better with short strokes to draw lines. Like tattoo artists do when making the first scetch.

short strokes. i can draw more evenly and generally better that way

Use all the lines you can get to come out of your hand. Make ghost lines without touching the implement to the paper, then make some marks when you feel you have the right motion. Use long, light lines to establish the broad view of what it is you are drawing, then work your way to more specific details that require tight, small strokes.
