Thalassaemia: The Biography (Biographies of Diseases) Thalassaemia is the most common type of genetic disorder in the human population, and one of the first whose genetic basis was established. Written by Sir David Weatherall, an expert in molecular medicine and the founder of the Institute of Molecular Medicine in Oxford in 1989, this tells the story of early reports of the disease, possible historical accounts, the identification of the disease as having an inherited basis, early work on thalassaemia as a disorder of the synthesis of haemoglobin, and from the 1960s, with the rise of…. I’ve started to suddenly feel dizzy and tired last Monday. It started to get worse and now I’m feeling dizzy AND exhausted, so much that I’ve stayed at home for the past few days. I went to the doctor to take a blood test – the results just came back, and it says my blood is normal. The doctor says that I have a regular-low blood pressure, no fever, no symptoms of anything (like runny nose or sore throat, etc). I have thalassaemia (a type of anemia) if this is relevant, but I also have high iron count from the blood test. I don’t exercise as much as I probably should, but I do exercise once…. Like how did it originate in that race ALL the way to the beginning? What caused certain races to carry those specific type of genetic disorders? The fact is, that Tay-Sachs can affect anyone, even if it can affect Ashkenazi Jews (Not Sefardic Jews so much), does not mean that any other person cannot contract it or be a carrier for the disease… When the facts are: Every ethnic group has a predisposition to certain genetic disorders. For example thalassaemia is more common among those from Mediterranean countries and sickle cell disease is more common among Africans. While TSD can affect anyone, Ashkenazi Jews (Jews with Eastern European ancestry) are much more likely to carry the faulty TSD gene. One in 25 Ashkenazi Jews carry…. Click Here to Read More

Starting from last week, I have been getting nosebleeds nearly every single day at least once. (for about ten days right now) The blood almost always comes out from one side of the nose. It lasts for about five minutes and then it stops. I’m sixteen, if that helps. I have never had nosebleeds like this before until now. I have no allergies that I know of. And I don’t think it’s from stress because there were times where I have been even more stressed than now and have never had any nosebleeds. However I do have blood diseases in my family. High-blood pressure, thalassaemia, and…. Click Here to Read More

I understand how PCR replicates a section of DNA, but how does this help in gene mutation identification? I am currently trying to do a report on Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis, and to identify a mutated gene the PCR technique is used but I really don’t understand how PCR identifies a gene mutation. All I can find online about PCR is that it amplifies the amount of DNA, but nothing about how it identifies a gene mutation. Please help! The specific gene mutation I am looking at is Beta-Thalassaemia. Thank you in…. Click Here to Read More
