Can hernias travel on a baby?
Category: Hernias
This may sound weird, but I heard that hernias can travel from the stomach to the groin. My daughter has a hernia on her belly button, and it worries me every time I look at it. The doctor says it’s harmless, but I can’t help but worry. My uncle had a hernia, but he had one on his groin and had to get surgery. Is it true hernias can travel from the belly button to the groin?

No.
“A hernia is the protrusion[1] of an organ or the fascia of an organ through the wall of the cavity that normally contains it.”
Your daughter has a weak spot that has allowed her insides to poke through. That spot won’t move. There are a few common spots, and that is one of them.
As for your uncles groin hernia, that is a problem that is more common in boys, although girls can have them also. But one type of hernia does not indicate another.

No, they can’t travel. My son had surgery at 8 weeks old for an inguinal hernia. Hope your daughter is better soon!
