Can a Fogarty catheter be used to remove a plastic embolism (foreign body ) in the vein of an extremity?
Category: Foreign Bodies

I am looking for the nursing interventions involved in the discovery of a plastic embolism, such as a piece of catheter that has been sheared off during the placement of an IV catheter.

sure- fogarty caths are used all the time to declot blood vessels. using it to remove a piece of plastic might be a little trickier though. i think you would be better off using something with graspers or pincers to hold on to the plastic rather than rely on the fogarty balloon to pull out the plastic shard.
