After reading the article below about the horrible things that happen with tongue piercing, would you do it?

CHICAGO Her doctor says the teenager with “horrendous pain” in her face was lucky it went away — when she removed her tongue jewelry.
A nerve disorder sometimes called “suicide disease” because of its excruciating pain is among the latest complications linked to tongue piercing.
The complaint detailed in the Journal of the American Medical Association joins a list that includes tetanus, heart infections, brain abscess, chipped teeth and receding gums. One woman developed so much scar tissue it resembled what she called a “second tongue.”
An Italian neurosurgeon who reported the nerve affliction says it’s an “extremely rare complication.” But the patient in the report — now 21 — says her advice to people considering tongue piercing is, don’t do it.

I personally wouldn’t because I am not crazy about tongue piercings, however I know plenty of people who have them. If they are done correctly then there shouldn’t be a problem. All piercings are risky. None of my friends have had any problems with their tongue after getting it done besides the obvious problem, being unable to eat anything solid for a while. The risks are low, and there is also a risk in just about anything you do to your body.

You say there it’s an extremely rare complication! I know quite a few people with their tongues pierced and they had no problems. I’ve watched a few being done. Saying that, I still wouldn’t have it done myself… just in case! (Plus I think it looks horrible!)
To ‘Diana’:
Although you are correct in saying that a clean environment is very important, this isn’t going to guarantee you a perfect piercing. If the bar strikes certain nerves in your tongue, your face can be paralyzed.

I already have my tongue piercing. And in your article it says its a rare disorder, working in the medical field i am familiar with this disease. But in your article it doesnt specify how it starts.
As a medical assistant, i gurantee anyone that has a tongue piercing or would like to get one; the key to ANY piercing or tatoo is keeping it clean and constantly being on top of any changes. Most people develop infections and dont do anything about it until after its gotten to a point that its too painful or the infection turns into a disease.
Please do not go around spreading nonsense to people. The article is accurate but it doenst specify many things, and of course anyone that goes through an expierience like that wouldnt want to get a piercing… i would tell people the same thing.

No, thanks. I am more afraid of pain than anything else.
Perhaps, I would go for belly piercing. It is an ideal place to do. It looks more sexy than scary.

well in my doctors office there was another complication of tonguepiercings. cine you have those 2 thick veins on the underside of your tongue bacteria can get into you blood stream and get to your heart and you can die. its ture. i read it a long time ago and dont remember all the details butt hats just a shorrt summary. they seem to dangerous for me to even consider gettign one. you talk weird when you get it done, i hear you chip your teeth. i would be worried about the jewelry coming out and choking on it!
yep just read the rest of the article you put in and it says heart infections anc shipped teeth!!!! joy….what a fun thing to have lol

I don’t need to read an article to stop me from getting one because I don’t want one in the first place.
