One by one, Riva Greenberg tears down 50 of the top myths that typically accompany diabetes. From “Type 2 diabetes is not as serious as type 1″ to “People with diabetes can’t eat sugar.” From “Women with diabetes shouldn’t get pregnant” to “If my doctor says it’s time for me to take insulin, I’m a failure”. The author hits every single myth on the head, with the expert support of many of the who’s who of the diabetes medical establishment (names in the list include Dr. Jovanovic, Dr. Kaufman, Dr. Polonsky and several more).
The book groups myths in six groups: common ones, medical myths, food myths, body fitness myths, psych myths and practical & practices myths. Each myth is followed by the truth behind it, a detailed discussion about why the myth is not true and a sidebar titled “Tips to Make You Tops” which gives you practical elements you can apply to help kill the myth in your own life.
Along with The Real-Life Guide to Diabetes this is one of the great practical books about living with diabetes I have read in quite a while.

As a person with diabetes, I look for answers to the many questions I have. The big question always is: Is that a myth, or is it the truth?
Riva’s book is the best I’ve read. Because I know her and her effective management of her own diabetes, I bought the book, and I was
not disappointed! Her use of real people and their experiences, her practical, understandable language, and her “Tips to Make You Tops’
make me feel that the book was written especially for me.

This book is great for anyone wanting to understand diabetes and how to manage it well. It is concise, conversational and upbeat – an easy read. As a person with diabetes, I’ve discovered that much of what I and many of my friends thought about diabetes was based on myth not truth. In fact, most days I hear someone repeat one of the myths debunked in this book such as sugar causes diabetes. Thankfully, Riva tackles the most prominent diabetes myths/fears with straight forward information backed by medical research and with practical tips from her own diabetes journey, from medical experts and from others living with diabetes. No matter where you (or your loved one) are in managing diabetes, this book offers ways to improve. Riva’s continuing encouragement that if we are armed with the “truths” of diabetes, we can manage diabetes well and live a healthy, happy life is a welcomed gift of empowerment.

By starting with what people think they know about diabetes and setting the record straight, Riva Greenberg has found a way to make diabetes education relevant and meaningful. By sprinkling her lessons with personal anecdotes and stories about real people, she humanizes the information and makes it real. And by providing up-to-date and accurate medical facts to a wide audience, she may well be saving lives. I recommend this book for all people with diabetes and for those who care about them.

There’s a deluge of misinformation on the market about diabetes. Author Riva Greenberg – also a patient – separates myth from truth in “50 Diabetes Myths That Can Ruin Your Life and the 50 Diabetes Truths That Can Save It”, a fine survey identifying the fifty most common popular diabetes myths and the realities. Interviews with experts in diabetes care accompany details on not just myths, but how to use real information to manage the condition and live a longer, healthier life.
